Since 2019, the Meddins’ have been using Platts Finebed, delivered loose in bulk to bed their cubicles 3 times daily at milking times, using a mechanical spreader. An artic moving-floor load lasts approximately 8 weeks and is unloaded straight into their shed. Cattle are housed all year round, and when we visited were impeccably clean.
James reports that the Finebed keeps their cows so dry and clean that cell counts have dropped to around 150. Cases of mastitis are minimal and as a result they’re spending less on antibiotic tubes and vet treatment than previously.
The cows experience no hock abrasions at all and hooves are in better condition too due to improved lying times.
Elaine even went as far to say that when milking, ¾ of cows come in so clean that they hardly need wiping. Of course, conscious of cow health, she stresses that pre-wiping is crucial as it provides a good opportunity to inspect teats and check for mastitis- but clean udders speed the process up.
Thank you Meddins’ family for your continued custom and kind hospitality for the afternoon! We’ll be sharing a video of Lynwood Dairy – and a testimonial from James shortly, so watch out on our social media in the coming weeks!
