For the first time, funding for adult cow (cattle aged at least six months old) housing projects is in the pipeline, which will allow farmers to upgrade existing cattle sheds.

Applications for this new grant are due to open in the autumn. Therefore, we will follow up with more information closer to the time, providing details and instructions on how to apply.

The Calf Housing for Health and Welfare Grant

This grant slightly differs from the cattle housing for health and welfare grant, as it’s purpose is to build new, or upgrade existing, buildings to house calves to deliver health and welfare benefits. The term, ‘calf’ refers to domestic cattle up to 6 months old.

With this project, housing must provide an ambient environment and facilitate social contact through pair or group housing.

To be eligible for this grant, you must be based in England are house calves on a permanent basis or for significant periods. The grant provides financial assistance to cover a portion of the costs associated with improving calf housing facilities. Funding is provided as a one-off payment to successful applicants.

The grant will support a range of improvements, including:

  • Upgrading or constructing new calf housing facilities.
  • Implementing measures to improve ventilation, drainage, and hygiene.
  • Installing equipment to enhance calf welfare, such as bedding materials or feeding systems.
  • Adopting practices that promote good health and welfare standards for calves.

This ‘Calf housing for health and welfare’ grant has now closed for the year but provides some indication of what to expect from the Cattle Housing for Health and Welfare Grant, opening in autumn this year.
