Cleanliness scoring is great for ensuring that your herd are remaining clean, content and productive. But what about the times when you find that your cattle aren’t as tidy as you’d hoped? Read on to find out how to deal with mucky cows within your herd…
Investigate the causes…
What is causing dirty cows in their environment? For example, could it be the size of cubicles, frequency of muck scraping, inadequate bedding or overstocking? Keep an open mind and look for any patterns.
If you’re noticing dirty cows- check the below:
- Bedding Hygiene and Management
- Shaving or flaming udders
- Manure Consistency
- Cubicle Comfort
- Use of auto-scrapers, or manual scraping of passageways.
…And then fix them!
When you’ve identified the causes of your dirty cows, talk to your suppliers or cow health professionals about how to remedy the issues. For example, talk to your cubicle supplier about making minor changes. Ask your nutritionist about making amendments to feed- or speak with us about finding your best bedding solution to suit your system.
