On the 10th of October 2023, our management team, along with other local businesses, attended the Wrexham Business & Community Awards, hosted by Net World Sports. The WBCA is crafted to be an inclusive platform, welcoming businesses of all sizes and sectors across Wrexham, so it was an honour to leave with the Green Wrexham Award.
Environmental and social responsibility is integral to every aspect of our operations. Recognising the imperative of sustainability from top to bottom, we understand that it is not only the right choice for the planet but also aligns with commercial sense and moral principles.
We are committed to limiting our impact and our products are designed to help our customers in waste reduction. Unlike other bedding products on the market, which are used generously, our best-selling dairy cubicle-conditioner requires only a minimal application, offering farmers an economical solution.
Moreover, we have achieved Level 5 of the BS 8555 UKAS accredited Environmental Management Standard, equivalent to ISO 14001, and we are actively working towards a carbon net zero target. Our Environmental Policy further outlines our commitment and specific objectives include reducing carbon footprint, waste, and fuel usage per tonne of product.
Acknowledged with the Royal Warrant, since 2018 for the supply of animal bedding, we continuously strive for sustainable business practices. Completing the B Corp Impact assessment across the group is another step in our commitment.
In our Transport Department, a combination of driver training, telematics technology, and modern vehicles is enhancing efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and ensuring driver safety. Telematics plays a crucial role in monitoring fleet efficiency, eliminating wasteful practices, and providing real data-based feedback for improvement.
We also rigorously review all aspects of the business, achieving a 23% reduction in total polythene usage last year despite increased bale production. Following some trials, a new polythene is now used to cover all pallets, containing 30% recycled material vs previous.
Our Green Team also meet monthly to drive sustainability initiatives, ranging from small changes to ambitious, long-term projects. So far, actions have included, using local milkman for deliveries, reusable water bottles and reducing office paper use. We’re working to create a ‘Litter Free Zone’ in our area with Keep Wales Tidy’, engaging with our neighbouring businesses.
And finally, following the ‘no-mow May’ initiative in 2022, the grass mound outside our offices has been left grow, providing a habitat for insects, invertebrates and birds.
